15 Reading Comprehension Questions to Ask Your Child

November 19, 2024

While the end goal of reading is comprehension, this also seems to be the hardest aspect of reading for many students. Far too often, students can be engaged in a book, but when you ask them any reading comprehension questions, you receive blank stares.

They may be decoding the text, but if they are not extracting meaning from it, they are not reading it.

Thankfully, like all skills, reading comprehension is a skill that your student can improve in. Students improve in reading comprehension by becoming more meta-cognitive, or aware of their own thinking.

These 15 reading comprehension questions below, split into questions to ask your child before, during, and after reading, will help your child strengthen their metacognition as a reader, regardless of if they have dyslexia or not.

Questions to Ask Before Reading

  • Why do you want to read this story?
  • What are you wondering about with this story?
  • Is this story real or make believe? How do you know?
  • What predictions can you make about what will happen in the story?
  • Why do you think the author wrote this story?

Questions to Ask During Reading

  • What do you think will happen next?
  • How are you similar / different from the main character?
  • What lesson is the author trying to teach you?
  • Was your prediction correct?
  • Why do you think the character did that?

Questions to Ask After Reading

  • Who were the characters in this story?
  • Using your five senses, describe the setting of the story.
  • How did the character change from the beginning to the end of the story?
  • What is the most important idea of this text?
  • What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?

Asking these 15 reading comprehension questions before, during, and after your child reads will help them to become more active, thoughtful readers.
